A WORKING MUSEUM

For centuries the Scottish Borders have produced Tweeds - in fact the name 'Tweed' immediately conjures up a picture of the Border hills and valleys. The company is based at Forest Mill, Selkirk in the heart of the Borderland, and is of specific historical interest, being classed as one of Scotland's "listed buildings".

The original buildings date from 1838, and were part of one of the first mills in the town, built by George Roberts & Co. It was when Roberts closed in the late 1960’s, and the mill buildings were sold off as separate units, that Andrew Elliot, seeking a manufacturing base for his fledgling company, acquired the old yarn store, to set up, what is still today, the core hub of his company.

MEET THE TEAM

Robin Elliot

Managing Director

Although having worked in the mill during school summer holidays, and from 1989-1990, Robin joined the company in 1992, when he started his degree course at the Scottish College of Textiles in Galashiels, with an eye on carrying on the business his father had started. Coming into the company full-time after graduation in 1996 and becoming a Company Director the following year, Robin took over as Managing Director in 2009.

Rob Beaton

Tuner/Weaver

Rob has been with the company since 1989, although he did work at times for the company in the early-mid 1980’s. Starting as an apprentice tuner in the late 1950’s, he worked with various mills in Selkirk and Galashiels, before becoming Andy Elliot’s “right-hand man”. If anyone will know anything about our old looms, then that’s Rob.

Ged Laidlaw

Weaver

Ged is an experienced Dobcross weaver of 30 years. He joined the company in 2016, having previously been a weaver with Claridge Mills in Selkirk, and Robert Noble’s in Peebles.

DANIELLE RAY

Warper/Weaver

Danielle is a experienced hand weaver, has worked with various designers in the UK and USA, and has a BA in woven textile design. She joined the company in 2022. She is also a member of the Tweed Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.
